Reduced cardiovascular fitness associated with exposure to clozapine in individuals with chronic schizophrenia
Psychiatry Research Jan 23, 2018
Kim DD, et al. - Researchers conducted this cross-sectional study to investigate whether exposure to clozapine was correlated with further reduced low peak aerobic power (VO2peak) compared with non-clozapine antipsychotics. Clozapine exposure was correlated with further reduced cardiovascular fitness, which could be explained by the drug's greater antagonistic activity at alpha-adrenergic receptors. In order to prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality, cardiovascular fitness ought to be promoted in individuals treated with antipsychotics, particularly clozapine.
