Red blood cell transfusion in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction: A meta-analysis of more than 21,000 patients
Netherlands Heart Journal Jul 29, 2018
Mincu RI, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from studies reporting the outcomes in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who received red blood cell transfusion, vs patients who did not. These studies were identified from PubMed, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Web of Science. The meta-analysis included five cohort studies involving a total of 21,770 STEMI patients. Findings revealed increased morbidity and mortality in patients with STEMI in relation to red blood cell transfusion. The higher morbidity observed in the red blood cell transfusion group alone could not explain this difference.
