Red and white blood cell counts are associated with bone marrow adipose tissue, bone mineral density, and bone microarchitecture in premenopausal women

Journal of Bone and Mineral Research Mar 30, 2020

Polineni S, Resulaj M, Faje AT, et al. - This cross‐sectional study and a longitudinal study were undertaken to determine if bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) would be correlated with circulating populations of hematopoietic cells (red and white blood cells) in humans. The authors analyzed 89 premenopausal women cross‐sectionally (median age [interquartile range], 27 [24.5, 31.7] years), including 35 with anorexia nervosa. In premenopausal women, BMAT is inversely correlated with WBC and RBC, and a potential relationship exists between longitudinal changes in BMAT and changes in RBC. Such connections warrant further analysis and may provide additional insight into the role and function of this understudied adipose depot.
