Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: A comparison of radiographic and pathologic tumor burden
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jul 21, 2020
Rooker SA, Nagelschneider AA, Moore EJ, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing recurrent pleomorphic adenoma tumor burden as detected on magnetic resonance and computerized tomography (CT) imaging with postoperative histopathology. Between 2000 and 2015, 44 patients were identified at a tertiary medical center. Patients were considered if they had viewable preoperative imaging and postoperative diagnosis of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma. The size of the largest pathology lesion can be accurately determined by imaging. CT scans significantly underpredict the number of lesions found on pathology compared with MRI. MRI should be prioritized if there are no contraindications. Such results will help guide the option of imaging, preoperative planning, and counseling for patients.
