Recurrent and acute abdominal pain as the main clinical manifestation in patients with hereditary angioedema
Allergy and Asthma Proceedings Mar 13, 2021
Cao Y, et al. - Among Chinese patients, clinical symptoms as well as management of hereditary angioedema (HAE)-related abdominal attacks were assessed to enhance the knowledge of emergency department (ED) physicians and gastroenterologists. A total of 107 patients with HAE from 94 unrelated families were analyzed via a Web-based survey. According to findings, patients with HAE commonly developed abdominal symptoms, which were acknowledged as the important clinical characteristics of this condition, but these symptoms are easily confused with other gastrointestinal disorders. In cases with recurrent and unexplained abdominal pain, ED physicians and gastroenterologists are advised to consider HAE. In cases with confirmed HAE diagnosis, timely administration of proper medical treatment is recommended, and there is a need for efforts to increase access in China to medications both for on-demand treatment and long-term prevention.
