Recurrence rate of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck after Mohs micrographic surgery vs standard excision: A retrospective cohort study
British Journal of Dermatology Sep 14, 2018
van Lee CB, et al. - For cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) of the head and neck, researchers assessed the risk of recurrence after Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) vs standard excision (SE). They conducted a retrospective cohort study of all patients with a cSCC treated with MMS or SE at the Department of Dermatology in a secondary or tertiary care hospital in the Netherlands between 2003 and 2012. For cSCCs of the head and neck, MMS may be more beneficial than SE due to less recurrences. When adjusted for tumor size and deep tumor invasion, CSCCs treated with MMS had a three times lower risk of recurrence than those treated with SE. During the entire follow-up period of 8.6 years, the cumulative incidence of recurrence for SE was higher than for MMS.
