Recurrence of tuberculosis in a low-incidence setting: A retrospective cross-sectional study augmented by whole genome sequencing
BMC Infectious Diseases Jun 13, 2018
Parvaresh L, et al. - Cases of recurrent tuberculosis (TB) in New South Wales, Australia, were examined using genotyping and whole genome sequencing (WGS). Researchers studied culture-confirmed TB cases diagnosed at least 12 months apart between January 2011 and December 2016. As per observations, consistently low rates of recurrent disease in low incidence settings could be achieved with TB control programs. Differentiation between reactivation and reinfection was augmented by WGS of implicated isolates. Outcomes here indicated that the majority of recurrences are due to reactivation rather than reinfection. High-quality public health practices and a low risk of local transmission were thus suggested by the predominance of reactivation over reinfection.
