Recurrence in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the lateral semicircular canal
Auris Nasus Larynx Nov 26, 2019
Ichijo H - Because persistent geotropic positional nystagmus is caused by a light cupula, heavy cupula produces apogeotropic positional nystagmus, and canalolithiasis accounts for transient geotropic positional nystagmus, the researcher studied the number of times of recurrence and identified the subtypes of a recurrent vertigo attack over the period of 5 years. The study sample consisted of patients with light cupula (n = 47), heavy cupula (n = 48), and canalolithiasis (n = 45). At the first visit, the subtype of a recurring vertigo attack was not always the same as the subtype. The recurrence rate was 72.3% for the light cupula group, 20.8% for the heavy cupula group and 28.9% for the canalolithiasis group. The risk of recurrence in light cupula patients is much higher than in heavy cupula or canalolithiasis patients. In patients with light cupula, the number of times of recurrence is greater than in patients with heavy cupula or canalolithiasis.
