Reconstructive outcome analysis of the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on immediate breast reconstruction: A retrospective cross-sectional study
BMC Cancer May 12, 2021
Yang JR, Kuo WL, Yu CC, et al. - Researchers intended to conduct a complete reconstructive outcome study of patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) who had immediate breast reconstruction. They retrospectively analyzed a single reconstructive surgeon’s immediate breast reconstructions carried out from July 2008 to December 2018. This analysis involved 269 patients. When implant-based reconstruction was planned, a higher rate of two-stage tissue expander-implant reconstruction was identified in the NACT group relative to direct-to-implant reconstruction. A higher need for postmastectomy radiotherapy was noted in the NACT group. Overall, findings demonstrate the safety as well as the reliability of immediate breast reconstruction for patients managed with NACT. This procedure afforded acceptable reconstructive complication rate as well as satisfactory aesthetic outcomes.
