Recent myocardial infarction is associated with increased risk in older adults with acute ischemic stroke receiving thrombolytic therapy
Journal of the American Heart Association Jul 25, 2019
Inohara T, et al. - Using data from the admissions in the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke hospitals, researchers investigated whether treatment with recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rtPA) is safe in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) with a history of recent myocardial infarction (MI). They investigated the impact of recent MI on the risk of mortality and rtPA-related complications. They compared rtPA-treated AIS patients with recent MI within 3 months to those with no history of MI, in terms of in-hospital outcomes, using multivariate logistic regression models. More severe stroke was reported in patients with recent MI vs those without. The rtPA-related complications did not show a statistically significant difference between the groups. An increased risk of in-hospital mortality was reported in relation to recent MI in older AIS patients treated with rtPA.
