Reassessing the cardiac box: A comprehensive evaluation of the relationship between thoracic gunshot wounds and cardiac injury

Jhunjhunwala R, et al. – Researchers planned this study to evaluate the adequacy of the anatomic borders of the current Âcardiac box to predict cardiac injury. To discriminate whether a gunshot wound (GSW) would cause a cardiac injury, the current cardiac box was inadequate for GSWs. Entrance wounds nearest to the heart were the most likely to result in cardiac injury as expected. However, it was best to think outside the Âbox for GSWs to the thorax from a clinical standpoint.
