Reasons for transition from electronic cigarette use to cigarette smoking among young adult college students

Journal of Adolescent Health Nov 16, 2019

Hiler M, et al. - Using a mixed-method participatory approach, ie, concept mapping, researchers explored reasons for the transition from e-cigarette use to cigarette smoking in nonsmoking young adults. Overall 60 unique statements were produced by the participants. They identified eight thematic clusters describing reasons for transition: “Sharing with Others,” “Psychological Coping,” “Cigarette Appeal,” “Reinforcing Effects of Cigarettes,” “Accessibility,” “Social Influence,” “Vaping Stigma,” and “Vaping Deficiencies”, in multidimensional scaling analysis. “Sharing with Others” and “Psychological Coping” were rated highest (most true) and “Vaping Deficiencies” was rated lowest (least true) by the participants. The top causes for transition among college students were the capability to share cigarettes with peers and access cigarettes from peers and smoking for stress/anxiety management. Based on these findings, it may be justified to make tailored prevention efforts directed at decreasing cigarette smoking uptake in college students who use tobacco as a means for psychological coping or social facilitation. The data is also suggestive of the possible relevance of regulatory decisions directed at curbing cigarette appeal, reinforcing effects, and accessibility, for reducing transition.
