Reasons for 90-day emergency visits and readmissions after elective total joint arthroplasty: Results from a US integrated healthcare system
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 17, 2018
Kelly MP, et al. - The purpose of this trial was to recognize the common causes of 90-day emergency department (ED) visits and readmissions in the hospital after primary elective unilateral total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Findings revealed that the most common reasons for 90-day ED visits following both total hips (THA) and total knees (TKA) were swelling and pain related to the procedure. The most common cause of the readmissions was noted to be the infection or unrelated procedures for THA and gastrointestinal or manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) for TKA. Modifications in discharge protocols could aid in preventing or alleviating these issues, thereby preventing unnecessary hospital returns.
