Readmissions following ambulatory pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery
The Laryngoscope Nov 28, 2019
McKeon M, et al. - In this study, researchers examined indications and rates of readmission following ambulatory pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Further, they sought for specific subgroups that may benefit from inpatient admission. In this retrospective database review, they assessed data of 3,669 unique pediatric ESS cases with 128 readmissions within 30 days from the Pediatric Health Information Systems 2004–2016 database. Outcomes suggest ESS as a moderately safe outpatient surgical procedure in pediatric patients, with an overall readmission rate of 3.5%. As per multivariable analysis, the risk of readmission increases significantly in correlation to age < 3 years and a prior diagnosis of asthma or cystic fibrosis. Based on these findings, they recommend clinicians to perform the preoperative evaluation carefully among very young patients and those with cystic fibrosis or asthma to optimize perioperative management.
