Readmission patterns during long-term follow-up after left ventricular assist device implantation
American Journal of Cardiology Jun 26, 2018
Vidula H, et al. - Researchers examined cases of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement at their institution to determine the rates, causes, and predictors of any and long-term readmission post-procedure. Accounting for mortality, they used a marginal rate model to assess readmission rates in 177 HeartMate II LVAD patients after following them for a mean of 1.90 ± 1.33 years post initial discharge after implantation. They reported readmission after LVAD implantation was common, however, long-term follow-up showed decreased readmission rates. Readmission during longer follow-up was primarily attributed to bleeding and infection and readmission rates may be attenuated via strategies to decrease these complications. An increased risk of readmission was observed among female patients and patients with renal dysfunction.
