Readmission after surgery for oropharyngeal cancer: An analysis of rates, causes, and risk factors
The Laryngoscope Sep 25, 2018
Goel AN, et al. - For patients undergoing surgery for oropharyngeal cancer, experts assessed the rate, diagnoses, and risk factors related to 30-day nonelective readmissions. The Nationwide Readmissions Database for patients who underwent oropharyngeal cancer surgery between 2010 and 2014 was evaluated. Readmission within 30 days was noted in approximately one in 10 patients undergoing surgery for oropharyngeal cancer. The independent risk factors were procedural complexity, insurance status, and advanced comorbidity, while the most common reasons for readmission are postoperative bleeding and wound complications. Postoperative bleeding and wound complications were the most commonly seen readmission diagnoses.
