Re-resection in incidental gallbladder cancer: Survival and the incidence of residual disease
Annals of Surgical Oncology Nov 21, 2019
de Savornin Lohman EAJ, van der Geest LG, de Bitter TJJ, et al. - From the Netherlands Cancer Registry, researchers assessed patients with incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) and reviewed pathology reports of re-resected patients in order to determine survival after re-resection, residual disease (RD), and prognostic factors. They included 463 patients; of these, 24% (n = 110) underwent re-resection after a median interval of 66 days. Thirty-five percent of patients exhibited RD; this was most frequently observed in the lymph nodes (23%). Observations revealed improved survival in correlation to undergoing re-resection for iGBC, however, this remains infrequently used and is frequently conducted after the optimal timing interval. The only significant prognostic factor for survival after re-resection was RD, which can be predicted by pT and pN stages.
