Re-examining the relationship between alcohol consumption and coronary heart disease with a new lens

Preventive Medicine Dec 08, 2018

Fan AZ, et al. - In view of the given correlation between moderate alcohol consumption and lower risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in the literature, researchers examined the association of alcohol drinking during the past 12 months and heaviest drinking period with the risk of CHD. For this pupose, they designed a case-control study using a population-based health survey of U.S. adults conducted from 2012 to 2013. Outcomes revealed a greater risk of coronary heart disease among current drinker reducers. Further, a reduction in drinking in the past was significantly more frequently noted for individuals with diagnosed CHD. This suggests a distortion of true alcohol-CHD relationship in correlation with a change in alcohol consumption over the life course among former and current drinkers.
