Rates of pregnancy among levonorgestrel and copper intrauterine emergency contraception initiators: Implications for backup contraception recommendations
Contraception Jun 25, 2021
Fay KE, Clement AC, Gero A, et al. - Via performing this secondary analysis of a randomized control trial of intrauterine devices (IUDs) for emergency contraception, researchers herein examined the timing, frequency, use of backup method and 1-month pregnancy rates among individuals with an IUD placed as emergency contraception and reported intercourse within seven days post-placement. Either a 52mg levonorgestrel intrauterine system (IUS) or 380mm2 copper IUD was placed in 518 individuals reporting unprotected intercourse in the preceding five days outside the first week of their menstrual cycle. After placement of an IUD for emergency contraception, there were low pregnancy rates, even among the many who resume intercourse within seven days after IUD placement without use of backup contraception.
