Rates of opioid prescriptions obtained after Mohs surgery: A claims database analysis from 2009 to 2020
JAMA Nov 22, 2021
Veerabagu SA, Cheng B, Wang S, et al. - Limited opioid prescriptions are advised to curtail the opioid epidemic. Researchers herein conducted a cross-sectional study of database claims with the aim to report on the frequency and changes over time (2009-2020) of opioid prescriptions following Mohs micrographic surgery.
Findings revealed an increase in the proportion of patients obtaining an opioid prescription after Mohs micrographic surgery from 2009 (34.6%) to 2011 (39.6%) and then a decline occurred each year, reaching a low in 2020 (11.7%).
Hydrocodone, codeine, oxycodone, and tramadol were the most common opioids during this time frame.
The downward trend indicates an increased recognition of opioid prescription risks among patients and dermatologic surgeons and public health warnings concerning the opioid epidemic.
