Rates of intrauterine device expulsion among adolescents and young women
Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Dec 12, 2020
Keenahan L, Bercaw-Pratt JL, Adeyemi O, et al. - By performing this retrospective chart review, researchers investigated the rate of intrauterine device (IUD) expulsion as well as risk factors for expulsion in adolescents and young adults. Eligible adolescent and young adult patients who had IUD insertion between August 2009 and March 2019 at a single children's hospital were included in this study. There were 642 eligible patients who underwent IUD insertion. Findings revealed that among adolescents and young women, there was a higher risk of primary and secondary IUD expulsion. Factors associated with a higher risk for IUD expulsion were: a history of abnormal uterine bleeding, anemia, bleeding disorder, and increased body mass index. Counseling is advised in this population regarding the possibility of having a higher risk for expulsion in association with these conditions.
