Rates of fertility preservation use among transgender adolescents
JAMA Apr 17, 2020
Pang KC, Peri AJS, En Chung H, et al. - Despite a previous report inscribing the desire for biological children in the future among 36% of transgender adolescents, fertility preservation (FP) access was reported in less than 5% of transgender adolescents in 3 recent North American studies. Researchers here sought to determine if the low rates of FP are due to service barriers (eg, cost and availability), unwillingness to delay hormonal treatment for FP, and/or an intrinsic lack of desire for FP. Hormonal intervention is increasingly sought by transgender adolescents to attain a body consistent with their gender identity. In treatment, gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists are provided to suppress puberty and the gender-affirming hormones testosterone and estrogen. Per current treatment guidelines, these individuals should be provided prior fertility counseling and access to FP as these interventions affect reproductive function.
