Rates of cardiac rhythm abnormalities in patients with CKD and diabetes
Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Apr 11, 2019
Akoum N, et al. - In this prospective observational study performed on patients with type 2 diabetes and patients with moderate to severe CKD who were not receiving dialysis, researchers assessed the rates of subclinical cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial and ventricular arrhythmias as well as conduction abnormalities, by using continuous ambulatory cardiac monitors. This study included 38 patients (34% women), with mean eGFR of 38±13 ml/min per 1.73 m2. Results revealed that 88.8 episodes per person-year (PY) was the estimated overall mean rate of any cardiac arrhythmia. In this patient population, a common occurrence of cardiac rhythm abnormalities was reported. High rates of atrial fibrillation were noted, with asymptomatic episodes. A higher rate of detected arrhythmia was noted in relation to a history of cardiovascular disease. While driven by premature ventricular contractions, the rates of reported ventricular arrhythmias were low.
