Rates in bronchiolitis hospitalization, intensive care unit use, mortality, and costs from 2004 to 2018
JAMA Dec 24, 2021
Mahant S, Parkin PC, Thavam T, et al. - Researchers aimed at ascertaining how health system efforts at deimplementing unnecessary care and reducing costs over the last 2 decades have affected bronchiolitis hospitalization, intensive care unit use, mortality, and costs.
Population-based health administrative data in Ontario, Canada, from April 1, 2004, to March 31, 2018, yielded data on 2,336,446 children younger than 2 years with and without bronchiolitis hospitalization for inclusion.
Per analysis, there were stable bronchiolitis hospitalization and mortality rates.
However, a substantial increase has been recorded in intensive care unit use from 38.1 to 87.8 per 1,000 hospitalizations, as was noted for hospitalization costs from $50,000 to $59,000 per 1,000 person-years.
