Rate of drop in serum calcium as a predictor of hypocalcemic symptoms post total thyroidectomy
Osteoporosis International Dec 08, 2019
Saad RK, et al. - A retrospective chart analysis (electronic and hard copy) of 429 individuals who underwent total thyroidectomy from January 2011 to December 2016 was conducted to determine whether thyroidectomy was an important and independent predictor of postoperative hypocalcemic symptoms following total thyroidectomy. Data on demographics, clinical features, information on surgical intervention, histopathology reports, clinical course, biochemistries, treatments and discharge instructions was obtained. After total thyroidectomy, the rate of drop of serum calcium notably and individually correlated to the development of hypocalcemic symptoms. Moreover, for earlier discharge and less aggressive management perioperatively, people with a rate of drop < 1 mg/dL/12 h should be considered.
