Rapid decline in visceral adipose tissue over 1 month is associated with poor prognosis in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer
Cancer Medicine May 28, 2021
Nakano O, Kawai H, Kobayashi T, et al. - In this study, the link between body composition changes and survival was inquired in 55 patients with advanced pancreatic cancer receiving palliative therapy or best supportive care (BSC). Clinical outcomes of participants were retrospectively reviewed. Receipt of chemotherapy, chemoradiation, or radiation therapy was documented in 45 patients (81.8%), whereas the rest of the patients received BSC. Findings demonstrated a close link of rapid decline in visceral adipose tissue over 1 month with poorer survival in unresectable advanced pancreatic cancer. A likely rational approach to predict prognosis in these cases is a short-term evaluation of body composition alterations.
