Rapid Administration of Methoxyflurane to Patients in the Emergency Department (RAMPED) Study: A randomized controlled trial of methoxyflurane vs standard care
Academic Emergency Medicine Nov 01, 2020
Brichko L, Gaddam R, Roman C, et al. - Via performing a randomized parallel‐group open‐label phase 4 trial, researchers aimed at determining the effectiveness of methoxyflurane vs standard care for the initial management of severe pain among adult emergency department (ED) patients. They enrolled a total of 120 patients with an initial pain score ≥ 8 on the 11‐point Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) and randomized them 1:1 to receive either inhaled methoxyflurane (3 mL) or standard analgesic treatment at ED triage. Outcomes suggest that the prespecified substantial reduction in pain was not attained with initial management with inhaled methoxyflurane in the ED, but its administration was linked with clinically significant lower pain scores compared with standard therapy.
