Randomized trial of proactive rapid genetic counseling vs usual care for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients
Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Apr 07, 2018
Schwartz MD, et al. - Among newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at increased risk for carrying a BRCA1/2 mutation, primary outcomes ie, genetic counseling and testing uptake and breast cancer surgical decisions were assessed in those who received rapid genetic counseling and testing (RGCT) vs UC. With RGCT, increased genetic counseling participation was attained, however, no increase was apparent in the rates of pre-surgical genetic testing and no impact on surgical decisions was seen. It was suggested that those patients most likely to opt for genetic testing at the time of diagnosis are being effectively identified by their surgeons.
