Randomized double-blind trial comparing effects of low-flow vs high-flow anesthesia on postoperative lung functions using respirometer
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Jan 21, 2021
Prasad TK, Gnanasekar N, Priyadharsini KS, et al. - In this prospective randomized double blind study, researchers examined how low-flow and high-flow anesthesia could impact postoperative pulmonary functions using respirometer. This study involved 110 patients receiving peripheral surgeries under general anesthesia. The participants were assigned into two groups Group I- Low-flow anesthesia with O2 + N2O + Sevoflurane (0.5L + 0.5L + 3.5%) and Group II- High-flow anesthesia with O2 + N2O + Sevoflurane (2L + 2L + 2%). Experts found that the difference in vital capacity, inspiratory reserve volume, and peak expiratory flow rates noted in both the groups between the preoperative and postoperative period was similar and statistically insignificant. Overall, findings revealed that low-flow anesthesia vs high-flow ones had comparable pulmonary impacts in patients receiving elective surgeries under general anesthesia.
