Randomized controlled trial: Split-dose and same-day large volume bowel preparation for afternoon colonoscopy have similar quality of preparation
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Oct 16, 2019
Castro FJ, et al. - In this single-center prospective randomized endoscopist blinded trial, researchers compared bowel cleanliness in patients taking same-day vs split-dose 4-L polyethylene glycol laxative for afternoon colonoscopy. In addition, they used a questionnaire to analyze patient satisfaction, adverse effects and patient tolerability. The study sample consisted of 300 patients (158 split-dose, 142 same-day). Higher incidence of vomiting was reported by the same-day preparation group. Investigators found that patients ingesting bowel preparation ≥ 7 hours prior to colonoscopy had higher total Ottawa scores. According to findings, no differences were found in the quality of preparation in patients taking same-day vs split-dose preparation for afternoon colonoscopy. Findings suggested that those receiving same-day preparation were less likely to lose sleep, but more likely to suffer from emesis. While choosing a bowel preparation regimen, these variations should be considered.
