Randomized controlled trial of weight loss vs usual care on telomere length in women with breast cancer: The Lifestyle, Exercise, And Nutrition (LEAN) study

Breast Cancer Research and Treatment Oct 18, 2018

Sanft T, et al. - Given that telomere shortening may be associated with increased breast cancer risk and mortality, and obesity is also associated with increased breast cancer risk and mortality, researchers examined changes in telomere length in breast cancer survivors following the receipt of a 6-month diet- and exercise-induced weight loss intervention vs usual care. A total of 151 breast cancer survivors with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 were included in this study. By means of quantitative-polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) done on buffy coat-extracted genomic DNA, relative telomere length (RTL) was measured. As per results, telomere lengthening could be seen as a result of a weight loss intervention in stage 0 and 1 breast cancer survivors vs a shortening in those under usual care.
