Randomized controlled single-blinded clinical trial of functional voice outcome after vascular targeting KTP laser microsurgery of early laryngeal cancer
Head & Neck Feb 06, 2019
Strieth S, et al. - In this prospective, randomized, single-blinded, clinical phase II study, researchers examined the functional voice outcome following transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) using a microvessel-ablative potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser vs a gold standard cutting CO2 laser. They evaluated the voice outcome after a follow-up of 6 months assessed by Voice Handicap Index (VHI-30)-questionnaires in those with unilateral high-grade dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, or early glottic cancer undergoing TLM-KTP or TLM-CO2. They observed a significant reduction in VHI scores following TLM-KTP (starting from the 9-week-follow-up visit) vs TLM-CO2. They noticed no occurrence of relapse following TLM-KTP vs one recurrence following TLM-CO2 within 6 months.
