Randomized comparison of early supplemental oxygen versus ambient air in patients with confirmed myocardial infarction: Gender related outcomes from DETO2X-AMI
American Heart Journal Mar 13, 2021
Alfredsson J, James SK, Erlinge D, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain how oxygen therapy affects cardiovascular outcomes in relation to gender in patients with confirmed myocardial infarction (MI). A total of 6,629 patients were randomized to either oxygen at 6 L/min for 6-12 hours or ambient air in the DETermination of the role of Oxygen in suspected Acute Myocardial Infarction (DETO2X-AMI) trial. Researchers here performed a subgroup analysis in 5,010 patients (1,388 women and 3,622 men) with confirmed MI. Findings suggest no significant effect of oxygen therapy in normoxemic MI patients on all-cause mortality or rehospitalization for MI or HF in women or men. Worse outcome was observed in women, which may be due to disparities in baseline characteristics, especially age.
