Randomized clinical trial of liposomal bupivacaine transverse abdominis plane block vs intrathecal analgesia in colorectal surgery
British Journal of Surgery Apr 05, 2019
Colibaseanu DT, et al. - The analgesic efficacy of liposomal bupivacaine Transverse abdominis plane (TAP) block was compared with intrathecal (IT) opioid administration in a multicentre RCT. Either TAP block or a single injection of IT analgesia with hydromorphone was administered to patients undergoing elective small bowel or colorectal resection. In total, researchers recruited 209 patients; of these, 200 completed the trial (TAP 102, IT 98). Outcomes revealed better immediate postoperative pain control on administering IT opioid than TAP block. Patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery had low pain scores in correlation to both modalities. Hence, they recommend considering these modalities in multimodal postoperative analgesic plans.
