Randomized clinical trial of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen as an adjunct to IV hydromorphone for acute severe pain in emergency department patients
Academic Emergency Medicine Mar 28, 2020
Bijur PE, Friedman BW, White D, et al. - Given the efficacy of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen as an adjuvant analgesic in postoperative settings, researchers examined its role in the ED. In this two‐arm, double‐blind randomized clinical trial, 1 mg of IV hydromorphone was administered to all patients. Then, these patients were administered either 1 g of IV acetaminophen or placebo. As per outcomes, neither clinically meaningful nor statistically superior analgesia was achieved with the addition of 1 g of IV acetaminophen to 1 mg of IV hydromorphone vs hydromorphone alone.
