Randomised oral stimulation and exclusive breastfeeding duration in healthy premature infants
Acta Pediatrica Jan 24, 2020
Skaaning D, Carlsen E, Brødsgaard A, et al. - This randomized controlled trial was undertaken to determine whether oral stimulation prolonged exclusive breastfeeding in premature infants. This trial was carried out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Hvidovre Hospital, Denmark between 2016 and 2018. Following training by occupational therapists, the parents conducted systematic oral stimulation. The sample consisted of 211 infants with a mean gestational age of 231 days, assigned to oral stimulation or standard care in the ratio 1:1. Data reported that 27% of orally stimulated infants were exclusively breastfeed compared with 25% of controls at six months of age. Oral stimulation performed by parents has no long-lasting impact on breastfeeding duration in healthy premature infants. Parental education and engagement should be given priority.
