Radiotherapy modality as a predictor of survival in hypopharyngeal cancer
Head & Neck Oct 15, 2018
Kiliç S, et al. - Authors sought to assess how the modality and dose of radiotherapy (RT) impacts survival in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer managed with definitive RT. For this study, 3,928 patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) were identified via the National Cancer Database. Findings suggested intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) could offer a significant survival benefit vs non-IMRT modalities in patients with HPSCC treated with definitive RT. They noted a greater likelihood of patients receiving IMRT to be white, have higher income, have the advanced classification, receive ≥66 Gy, and receive chemoradiotherapy vs those receiving non-IMRT techniques. For the IMRT group, the 5-year OS was 41.9% and for the non-IMRT group it was 36.8%. Significantly better OS was seen in IMRT after propensity score matching.
