Radiotherapy in periocular cutaneous malignancies: A retrospective study

Dermatology Apr 05, 2019

Lazarevic D, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers assessed the safety and effectiveness of radiotherapy (RT) in the treatment of periocular skin tumors by estimating the data of cases at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, between 2009 and 2014. They studied cutaneous melanoma, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with correlated in situ lesions, lentigo maligna (LM), cutaneous lymphoma and Kaposi's sarcoma. A total of 159 periocular lesions were recorded in 145 subjects. They observed the highest overall recurrence for actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease (27%), melanoma (17%) and LM (15%). They also noted 11 and 10% of recurrence in SCC and BCC, respectively. Overall, they suggested RT as a good therapeutic treatment with minimal adverse events.
