Radiological severity of hip osteoarthritis in patients with adult spinal deformity: The effect on spinopelvic and lower extremity compensatory mechanisms
European Spine Journal Feb 14, 2018
Day LM, et al. - Researchers intended to gauge the impact of hip osteoarthritis (OA) on compensatory mechanisms in sagittal spinal deformity (SSD) patients. It was determined that subjects with coexisting spinal malalignment and severe osteoarthritis (SOA) compensated by pelvic shift and thoracic hypokyphosis instead of pelvic tilt (PT). This was possibly due to limited hip extension secondary to SOA. Hence, SOA presented with worse global sagittal alignment when compared to their limited osteoarthritis (LOA) counterparts.
