Radiological results of surgical management of fracture of the distal radius treated with volar locking plates
Injury Mar 02, 2020
García-Cepeda I, et al. - In this retrospective study of distal radius fracture (DRF) treated by open reduction and internal fixation with a volar locking plate during a period of 8 years (2010–2018), researchers appraised functional and radiological results. They assessed a total of 170 patients (63.5% female; mean age: 55.9 years [24.1–83.7; 13.76]). Outcomes revealed a correlation between the articular step-off and the range of motion in DRF treated with volar locking plates possibly for the first time. Initial conservative treatment with closed reduction and casting rather than early surgical management did not influence the outcomes. The requirement for a second surgical intervention with worsened outcomes was observed in correlation with the younger age of patients, complete articular and high energy fractures. They identified the incidence of complications and the need for revision as important with good or excellent radiological and functional results for most.
