Radiologic parameters of ankylosing spondylitis patients treated with anti-TNF-α vs nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and sulfasalazine
European Spine Journal Feb 14, 2019
Son SM, et al. - Investigators assessed 133 cases to examine the radiologic parameters among candidates with ankylosing spondylitis treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and sulfasalazine (SSZ) (group A) vs anti-tumor necrosis factor-α (anti-TNF-α) (group B). They evaluated clinical outcome with the Bath AS Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). They observed that 69 subjects attained excellent pain control outcome in group A. Significantly higher values of mean ESR, CRP, BASDAI, and thoracic kyphosis at baseline were observed in group B. They also found group B with higher lumbar lordosis (LL) and significantly better clinical outcomes after the regimen. They noticed a relationship between radiologic parameters and BASDAI.
