Radiologic imaging in trauma patients with cervical spine immobilization at a pediatric trauma center
The Journal of Emergency Medicine Oct 10, 2019
Barnes BC, Kamat PP, McCracken CM, et al. - In pediatric trauma patients with cervical spine (CS) immobilization, researchers described the use of procedural sedation (PS) and analgesia for radiologic imaging acquisition. Retrospective medical record analysis was conducted in a high-volume pediatric trauma center for all trauma patients with CS immobilization. In total, 1,417 patients met the inclusion criteria with 1,898 imaging encounters. More than one radiographic imaging procedure was needed for a total of 398 patients. With their radiological imaging, just 50% of CS immobilized, nonintubated patients needed a single sedative or analgesic drug. The most common adverse event was airway obstruction, occurring in 5 of 956 patients. All imaging procedures have been successfully completed.
