Radiographic prevalence of sacroiliac joint abnormalities and clinical outcomes in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome
Arthroscopy Sep 13, 2019
Krishnamoorthy VP, Beck EC, Kunze KN, et al. - In patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) by use of various imaging modalities, researchers quantified the prevalence of sacroiliac joint (SIJ) abnormalities and compared results based on sacroiliac joint (SIJ) abnormalities. From January 2012 to January 2016, plain radiographs, CT scans, and MRI scan of patients who had primary hip arthroscopy for FAIS were identified. The data presented in this work showed a high prevalence of SIJ abnormalities (25.2%) on imaging in FAIS patients. After treatment with FAIS, these patients may demonstrate considerably inferior clinical results and persistent postoperative pain. The findings of this research may enable orthopaedic surgeons to better educate SIJ abnormalities patients that after hip arthroscopy they may not attain clinically important outcome improvement.
