Radiographic imaging in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: A claims analysis
International Journal of Nephrology and Renovascular Disease May 10, 2021
Sanon Aigbogun M, Stellhorn RA, Pao CS, et al. - Given there exists limited published literature pertaining to the real-world abdominal imaging utilization patterns in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), researchers assessed abdominal imaging scans occurring from January 1, 2014, through June 30, 2017, in this retrospective healthcare administrative claims analysis utilizing the IBM MarketScan commercial and Medicare supplemental databases. They noted that 59% of the 4637 patients with ADPKD had ≥ 1 abdominal imaging scan. Of these, 46% patients underwent ≥ 1 computed tomography (CT) scan, 25% received ≥ 1 ultrasound, 10% had ≥ 1 magnetic resonance imaging scan. More frequency of CT imaging in later stages was revealed among 1,754 patients (38%) with chronic kidney disease stage information. The proportion of patients receiving at least 1 CT or MRI scan rose with disease severity. The findings of this study lend support to the necessity for further inquiry into abdominal imaging utilization in managing patients suffering from ADPKD.
