Radiofrequency catheter ablation prior to percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with atrial fibrillation coexisting with stable coronary artery disease: A single-center pilot study

Heart and Vessels Oct 18, 2018

Kawada S, et al. - In this single-center pilot study, researchers investigated whether radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) prior to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is efficacious and safe as a management strategy in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who had concomitant stable cardiovascular disease (CAD). Of a total of 264 patients (179 men; mean age, 65.5 ± 10.1 years) who were referred to undergo a first RFCA procedure, 37 patients who had AF with stable CAD received either RFCA prior to PCI (n = 13) or PCI prior to RFCA (n = 24) (four patients excluded because of left main coronary artery disease or triple vessel disease). According to findings, compared with prior PCI, prior RFCA in patients with AF coexisting with CAD could have fewer serious bleeding events, but there was no significant difference in AF recurrence rate after the procedure between the groups.
