Radiofrequency ablation of turbinates after septoplasty has no effect on allergic rhinitis symptoms other than nasal obstruction
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Aug 30, 2019
Kang T, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective, randomized, controlled study to assess the impacts of inferior turbinate radiofrequency ablation (RFA), performed after septoplasty, on patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) symptoms. The study sample consisted of 60 patients with both a deviated nasal septum (DNS) and AR. Study participants who had septoplasty/sham surgery constituted the Septo-Sham group and those who had septoplasty/RFA formed the Septo-RFA group. Between the groups, the baseline features were comparable. Investigators found that both types of surgery afford postoperative symptomatic improvement for patients with both DNS and AR. Both types of surgery resulted in improvement in both nasal obstruction and non-nasal obstruction symptoms. Performing RFA after septoplasty, however, did not provide additional symptomatic short-term improvements. Septoplasty without RFA can, therefore, be optimal for both DNS and AR patients.
