Radioactive seeds insertion with chemotherapy for advanced non‐small‐cell lung cancer: A meta‐analysis

The Clinical Respiratory Journal Oct 01, 2020

Wu H, Li L, Yang J, et al. - Among patients suffering from advanced non‐small‐cell lung cancer (NSCLC), researchers evaluated the relative effectiveness of chemotherapy alone vs chemotherapy in combination with computed tomography (CT)‐guided radioactive seed insertion (RSI). Relevant articles were identified from Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. For this meta‐analysis, eight studies were included, with 281 patients that underwent combination treatment and 297 patients that underwent chemotherapy. In patients in the combined treatment group, significantly higher complete response, total response, and disease control rates were found vs patients in the chemotherapy only group. Overall, findings demonstrated that significant improvement of clinical response as well as prolongation of survival can be achieved with a combination of chemotherapy and CT‐guided RSI in advanced‐stage NSCLC patients without other significant toxic side effects.
