Radical vs partial nephrectomy, chronic kidney disease progression and mortality in US veterans
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Jan 18, 2018
Streja E, et al. - This study included a large nationally representative cohort of US veterans who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy, wherein, researchers re-examined the validity of the hypotheses that partial nephrectomy may yield better patient and kidney survival and similar oncological outcomes compared with radical nephrectomy. Findings revealed that radical nephrectomy resulted in worse postnephrectomy kidney function and higher mortality. In addition, it was observed that irrespective of the type of nephrectomy, a low presurgical estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and a greater decrease in eGFR postsurgery were associated with worse mortality.
