Radiation exposure from pediatric CT scans and subsequent cancer risk in the Netherlands

Journal of the National Cancer Institute Mar 14, 2019

Meulepas JM, et al. - Using a nationwide retrospective cohort, researchers assessed the association between exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation from computed tomography (CT) scans in childhood and subsequent risk of developing leukemia and brain tumor. Information was obtained for 168,394 children (<18 years of age) who had one or more CT scans in a Dutch hospital between 1979 and 2012. Cancer incidence rates from the general Dutch population were determined to estimate standardized incidence ratios. An increased brain tumor risk was evident in relation to CT-related radiation exposure. Findings revealed no correlation with leukemia. A higher incidence of brain tumors was found in the cohort of children with CT scans vs the general population.
