Radiation dose and risk of exposure-induced death associated with common CT procedures in Yazd province
European Journal of Radiology Mar 13, 2020
Masjedi H, et al. - This study was intended to assess the radiation dose delivered to the patients through different CT procedures along with its corresponding risks in Yazd province. Between March 2017 and February 2018, data for the five most common procedures were obtained from six institutions. The effective dose for each individual was determined by ImpactDose software. Researchers estimated the risk of exposure-induced death (REID) by coupling the BEIR VII model and ICRP 103 data for the Asian population. The calculated effective doses for all the procedures except sinus were comparably low, nevertheless, the changes among patient doses, even for a given procedure, were substantially high, showing that further optimization processes require to be undertaken. Furthermore, it was concluded that approximately 2000 scans of abdomen-pelvis conducted on 20-year-old women could result in 1 radiation-induced cancer death, which in large scales may cause drastic health issues. This study demonstrated that several methods, one of which is the implementation of DRLs, can be proposed to decrease the collective dose from CT scans.
